The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka has confirmed that the Chinese ship Yuan Wang 5 has been approved to port at Hambantota port from August 16 to 22.

On August 9, Reuters reported that a Chinese research vessel had left for Hambantota and was en route.

India fears that China may use the port for military activities. The $1.5 billion Hambantota port is close to major shipping routes to Asia and Europe.

India has been expressing its concern over the port ever since Sri Lanka mortgaged it for 99 years for defaulting on a loan.

Now with this decision of the Sri Lankan government, India's concern will surely increase a couple of times.

China describes its 'Yuan Wang 5' as international shipping and research and survey ship, but it is also called a dual-use spy ship.

India has previously expressed concern over China's growing activities in the Indian Ocean. Along with this, the way China's influence on Sri Lanka is increasing, It is also a cause of concern for India.
